Lloyd Cardwell has a significant place in Nebraska sports history. Not only did he play running back for the Huskers in 1935 and 36 scoring 120 points in 24 games and winning back to back big 6 rings, he also was twice named an all Nebraska 1st team in football , second team in basketball and won three pentathlon and hurdles titles to go along with two long jump championships in high school.
After his college days Lloyd played seven seasons with the Detroit Lions after being their 1st round pick in 1937. When his playing days were over he took over as Head Football coach at Omaha University, now UNO. There he guided Omaha U to a 7-6 victory over Eastern Kentucky in the Tangerine Bowl in 1955. After the 1959 season Coach Cardwell hung up his whistle and coached track at Omaha U until 1978 when he retired.
