Like most other receivers at NU, Tyrone Hughes didn’t put up gaudy numbers during his time here. His 31 career receptions for 451 yds and 5 TD’s do not look impressive when compared to players of the same position of other schools. But nothing could be further from the truth. Tyrone’s impact at Nebraska was immense. He was an accomplished kick and punt returner which gained him NFL fame with the New Orleans Saints. He even played both ways, gaining time in George Darlingtons defensive back field when injuries demanded it. He was not a stop gap as at cornerback until the injured players returned. He excelled at the position with little practice time.
His time with the Saints though gained him Hall of Fame status. Playing for his hometown team as a St Augustine grad in New Orleans, Hughes set the NFL record with 304 kick return yards AND most combined kick and punt return yards in a single game (347). Both still stand. In 2015 Hughes was elected into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame. gj
